Why do David Bowie’s eyes look different? When Bowie was 15, his friend, George Underwood, punched him in the left eye while wearing a ring because they were fighting over a girl. For 8 months, Bowie was out of school undergoing operations to fix his eye. Since the doctors could not fully repair the damage, the left eye’s pupil is permanently dilated. Bowie has said that out of that eye, he can only see a brownish tone. Each eye is still blue but since the one pupil is always open the eyes look different. Bowie and Underwood remained good friends and Underwood did the artwork for Bowie’s earlier albums.
